In a reverse result of their clash in the regular season, John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School defeated Willeton Senior High School by seven points in the Freo Dockers Cup Moore Division Grand Final at Domain Stadium.
Playing as a curtain raiser for Freo’s Saturday night clash with Hawthorn, Willeton raced out to a two-goal lead before JSR responded with a goal late before half time.
With hundreds of passionate fans cheering on from the stands, JSR continued their push after the main break and held the slimmest of leads with a one-point margin at three quarter time.
The final quarter was hotly contested, as JSR extended their lead with nine minutes left on the clock and held on to secure the trophy.
In the post-match presentation, Fremantle’s AFLW senior coach Michelle Cowan was on hand to present the best and fairest awards to Rhiannon Couldridge from JSR and Tessa Miotti of Willeton.
Both players were awarded a signed jumper by Fremantle’s inaugural AFLW side.
Talking post game, Couldridge almost couldn’t believe the result.
“It was crazy, I actually didn’t realise what the score was until I looked at the scoreboard with 30 seconds to go,” Couldridge said.
“I couldn’t believe we were in with a crack.
“It’s such an amazing feeling to win after we lost to them in the regular season.
“We worked together as a team so well and everyone just communicated so well. I was just trying to bring everyone together, it’s a good feeling.
While Couldridge is targeting a career in basketball, she’s excited about the prospect of playing in the AFLW one day.
“I love my sport and I’d love to play footy in the future, I enjoy playing it so much,” Couldridge said.
“Just with the AFLW coming up now, I feel like I need to get into that. If basketball doesn’t work out footy is definitely my go to.”
