Despite putting up career-best numbers in his eighth AFL game, defender Griffin Logue could only feel disappointment as Fremantle fell by 52 points to Hawthorn on Saturday night at Domain Stadium.
It was Hawthorn who set the tone early with the opening four goals and Logue said Freo expended plenty of energy in their efforts to bridge the gap.
Fremantle kicked three straight after Hawthorn’s opening run - appearing to be get on top of the Hawks - until Luke Breust produced an impressive dribbling goal from the pocket mid-way through he second term.
From there, Hawthorn kicked 10 of the following 14 goals to shut the door on Freo.
Fremantle won the clearances by 12 and the contested ball by five on the night, but Hawthorn stayed true to the game plan that proved so successful in recent years, dominating play and winning the uncontested possession count by 88.
“For a number of years they’ve owned the outside ball,” Logue said.
“It’s just a matter of us needing to get after them faster.
“They put us under the pump pretty early and they just shot out of the blocks, so we were under pressure.
“That’s always going to take energy because you’re on the back foot from the start, it’s tough.”
Logue remained a raw talent that showed flashes of the brilliance that saw the 19-year-old taken at no.8 in the 2016 National Draft, picking up 15 disposals with eight marks in Fremantle’s backline.
The Swan Districts product provided Freo with some run forward and also performed in the clinches with five contested possessions and two tackles.
Logue remained grounded about his performance on the night as Hawthorn’s forwards got the better of Freo’s defence with a six goal to two final quarter.
“I'm just happy to try and do my role, I feel I lapsed a little bit in the last quarter but I’ll see how I go,” Logue said.
“I’m feeling more confident each game, it’s just not as good (of a feeling) when you don’t win.”
