Exciting young midfielder Connor Blakely has agreed to a two-year contract extension at Fremantle, which will see the 21-year-old at the club until at least the end of season 2019.
Blakely was taken with pick no.34 in the 2014 National Draft, a part of the same draft class as Lachie Weller, Ed Langdon and Josh Deluca.
He is averaging 23.8 disposals and 3.5 clearances per game in his third season and was one of Freo’s best while playing a role at half-back against Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Sunday.
General manager of list management Brad Lloyd said that versatility was just one of many qualities Blakely brings to Fremantle.
“We’re really excited to sign Connor on, he’s a big part of our future,” Lloyd said.
“We’re really developing a young group and he’s a really strong part of that.
“He’s young and he’s really acquitted himself well so far at AFL level. He’s managed to play well in a variety of positions and he’s got a strong future ahead of him at the club.”
Blakely, who hails from Bunbury and played for Swan Districts in the WAFL, said he was delighted to be able to continue to play football for Freo and in his home state.
“I think it was a no-brainer decision,” Blakely said.
“I’m from WA and all my friends and family are here. It’s a really good lifestyle and I love the club.
“I’ve formed some great friendship with the boys at the club so it was a decision that wasn’t hard at all, so I’m really happy.”

Blakely also said that he was excited about the direction the club was taking.
“I think being in a facility like this helps a lot with the standard and what it offers us,” Blakely said.
"It’s a really exciting time at the club and as I said before it was a no-brainer.
“I think we’re a young group and when we put it together we’ve shown that we’re good enough to take it up to anyone in the competition.”
