- AFLW: Gibson and Williams sign on
New AFLW signing Alex Williams says she couldn’t be happier to be returning home to Western Australia.
The key defender, who played for GWS in the inaugural AFL Women’s season, recently signed on with Fremantle during the AFLW Free Agency Period.
“I’m really excited, when the opportunity came up I couldn’t turn it down,” Williams said.
“I’m really happy to come back. I’ve supported Freo since forever. Pulling on the jumper is going to be amazing.
“It’s probably the one thing I’ve dreamt about and to have that come true is great.”
Williams becomes the sixth member of the East Fremantle WAWFL side at Freo.
The 24-year-old joins Gabby O’Sullivan, Cassie Davidson, Mel Caulfield, Brianna Green and Belinda Smith as a Shark at Freo.
“I got a message from each of them since I’ve signed, which was really nice,” Williams said.
“They were really happy and I’m stoked to join them out here.”
Williams said she was looking forward to utilising Fremantle’s new facility at Cockburn in the off-season.
“It’s great, it’s huge. There’s so much stuff here,” Williams said.
“The new gym is awesome so I can’t wait to get in there and get started.
“I’ll get some advice on what I need to be working on.
“I’ll talk to (senior coach) Michelle (Cowan) and see what she wants me to work on next season.
“I’ll also talk to ‘Juddy’ (Kara Donnellan), the captain of the club, and get some insight from her as well.”
