When it mattered most, a cool headed Shane Kersten snapped a magical goal to give Freo the lead in the final minute of their clash with North Melbourne at Domain Stadium on Saturday.
The goal put Freo ahead with 41 seconds on the clock and secured their third straight win – but Kersten remained modest about his moment in the spotlight.
“(I’m) pretty excited, I was just in the right place at the right time,” Kersten said.
“I went to the back of the pack, Johnno (Michael Johnson) created a good contest, and as I said I was in the right place at the right time.
“I put it on the boot and I was lucky enough to see it go through.
“I couldn’t be happier.”
Kersten credited Fremantle’s senior players for lifting the side in the final term.
David Mundy was everywhere with 12 possessions in the fourth quarter, while Nat Fyfe had seven contested possessions and five clearances.
“At the end of the day (the goal) got us across the line, but I’m not the hero,” Kersten said.
“It took 22 men out there to get us across the line, and especially our leaders in Nat and Dave Mundy.
“In that final quarter they set the barometer and they brought us through.”
