A home-ground advantage was not enough to give the Fremantle Dockers women’s team an edge over Brisbane in round 2, losing by 13 points.
Fremantle’s first home game of the 2017 season saw a strong, physical start with plenty of tackles and awe-inspiring marks.
But the Lions broke away in the second half to steal a second victory away from home, after defeating the Demons in Melbourne last week..
Fremantle midfielder Lara Filocamo was reliable throughout the match, racking up 17 disposals and four tackles.
“I always just play my role for the team,” she said.
“I play whatever role I am given and give 150 per cent and play with my heart and soul.
“The game plan was to be more physical, win the contested possessions and get the clearances out.
“I think we managed to equal them in clearances which was good and we were also trying to get the ball forward as quick as we could.”
Despite the unfortunate result, Filocamo said it was honourable to play in front of a crowd of ten thousand people at Fremantle Oval.
“You feel a lot of pride because you’ve got all these supporters coming down to see you play,” she said.
“It just feels amazing and it’s great for people to get amongst AFLW and women’s sport in general.”
“[The team is] trying to move forward from the loss and we are trying to regroup and get ourselves moving again and look forward to next weekend.”
Next weekend will see Fremantle take on Greater Western Sydney at Blacktown International Sports Park and the girls will look to get their first win on the board.
“Next week we’ll assess everything and look for our forward line to regroup and work together a bit more,” Filocamo said.
“Hopefully we’ll kick a few more goals.”
