Fremantle will play the majority of their games at home in the inaugural AFLW season, including two at Fremantle Oval.
In the full AFLW fixture announced this morning, Fremantle will contest four of their seven regular season games in WA.
The much-anticipated round one clash will be interstate, however, played under lights at VU Whitten Oval against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday 4 February.
Freo’s fans first chance to see their AFLW team at home will come in round two, when Fremantle face Brisbane on Sunday 12 February at Fremantle Oval.
After an away fixture against GWS in round three, Fremantle will return to WA for three straight weeks at home, starting with Adelaide on Sunday 26 February at Fremantle Oval.
Rounds five and six will be played as double headers with the AFL’s JLT Community Series, with games at Rushton Park against Collingwood on Saturday 4 March and at Domain Stadium against Carlton on Friday 10 March.
The top two teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the inaugural AFL Women’s Grand Final, to be played on Saturday 25 March.
Women’s senior coach Michelle Cowan welcomed the draw, with the fixture only helping to build the excitement within her ranks.
“I’m very excited for us, we have four home games giving our members and supporters lots of opportunities to get behind the girls,” Cowan said.
“It’s a great competition in that we get to play every single team once. The top two teams play off in the final, making every regular season so much more important to get the four points.”
All Fremantle games will be broadcast live on Foxtel, while the season opener against the Bulldogs will be simulcast on Channel Seven.
Cowan welcomed the TV deal, seeing two of Australia’s major broadcasters helping to promote the women’s game and inspire the next generation.
“I’ve said before that I grew up watching AFL live in my living room and it was 44 men broadcast into my living room,” Cowan said.
“Now we get the opportunity to turn on the TV and watch 44 incredible role models, with these young women broadcast into every girl’s living room.
“The girls will be sending an amazing message and it will be amazing to watch.”
With Fremantle’s home opener just over two months away, Cowan put out a call for the Freo faithful to fill Fremantle Oval with purple.
“What an amazing atmosphere that could be,” Cowan said.
“To have thousands of people down here watching the girls, we’re certainly training hard and getting ready to go for round one.
