The Fremantle Dockers have allocated numbers to the club’s 2016 draftees, with the new AFL recruits and the club’s AFLW team all presented with their jumper numbers on Friday at the club’s Junior Members Christmas Party at Fremantle Oval.
Fremantle CEO Steve Rosich also confirmed that jumper number 29 worn by six time Doig Medallist Matthew Pavlich in 353 games for the club, including 189 as captain, would not be allocated to a player in either the club’s AFL or AFLW teams in 2017.
“To acknowledge the outstanding contribution to the Fremantle Football Club over 17 seasons by Matthew as a former captain, club champion and games record holder, we have not allocated jumper number 29 to a player in season 2017 in the club’s AFL or AFLW teams,” Rosich said.
“In addition, as per our established protocol, in the year after Matthew’s retirement we will go through a formal process with the board to determine how best to acknowledge Matthew’s contribution to the club in the longer term.”
Taken with Fremantle’s first top-10 pick since 2009, Griffin Logue will wear number 2, a number worn previously by former co-captain Adrian Fletcher for 79 games from 1998 to 2001.
Prospective ruckman Sean Darcy will wear number four, worn Paul Hasleby in 208 games from 2000 to 2010, as well as Andrew Wills in 79 games from the club’s inaugural season until 1999.
Brennan Cox will wear number 36, worn previously by inaugural Docker Quenton Leach in 56 games for the club, while fellow defender Luke Ryan will don number 38.
Rookies Taylin Duman and Luke Strnadica will wear numbers 44 and 45 respectively.
Re-drafted rookies Brady Grey and Josh Deluca retain their original numbers of 28 and 39 respectively.
Marquee player Kara Donnellan will wear number 15 in the inaugural AFLW season and fellow marquee player Kiara Bowers has number 2 reserved for when she returns from injury, while priority signings Ebony Antonio and Kirby Bentley will wear 12 and 23 respectively.
