Connor Blakely says joining Peel to make the club’s first ever WAFL grand final is “unreal” after Sunday’s win over South Fremantle in the Preliminary Final.

Blakely was a consistent force in the midfield displaying clean ball movement, strong tackling and quick footwork to round off the game with 42 possessions.

“It was unreal, we certainly set up the win in the first half where we played really well and then had a bit of a lapse in the third quarter,” Blakely said.

“But I think we had the game done and dusted by then and all the boys gave great effort and that’s all you can ask.

“When it comes to finals you just need to keep it simple and I think all of us kept it really simple and that’s why we won.”

Key forward Michael Apeness had only praise for the young midfielder.

“He brings grunt to the side, getting the ball forward for us,” Apeness said.

“He lays lots of tackles and that’s why we love him.”

Blakely said he had gained plenty of experience over the 15 games he played for Fremantle this season.

“I’ve learned to keep the emotions really flatline and you don’t ride the highs too high and the lows too low throughout the game,” he said.

“You’re going to win and lose contests all the time and it’s just about moving onto that next moment and, when you do that, you give yourself the best chance to have a good game.”
