Every good story comprises of a few key elements. Here is the who, what, when, where and why ahead of Fremantle’s clash with West Coast at Domain Stadium on Sunday.

Who – Aaron Sandilands and Josh Kennedy
Two very influential figures in their respective teams, these two players could be instrumental in their teams’ search for success. Sandilands is returning from broken ribs and a punctured lung, suffered during the Carlton Draught Derby in round three. The ruckman averages 30 hit-outs per game, and Fremantle have won 14 of the 22 derbies he has played in.

Kennedy is leading the Coleman Medal race in 2016, and is a key cog in West Coast’s forward line. If he isn’t directly involved in the play, he opens up the space for Jack Darling or Mark LeCras to lead into.

What – Derby Day
The Carlton Draught Derby always has fierce competition and fantastic rivalry, with the second instalment for 2016 holding motivation for both sides. Last time out, Fremantle led to quarter time before the Eagles kicked away in the third, winning by 33 points.  West Coast have won the previous two derbies, and lead the head-to-head 23 wins to Freo’s 20.

Still a lot to play for: Lyon

When – Sunday Football
This weekend is a the second of three consecutive Sunday games at Domain Stadium for Fremantle, while West Coast are coming off an eight day break, but have travelled from Melbourne.

Where – Domain Stadium
With Perth Stadium set to be ready for the 2018 AFL season, this will likely be the third last time these teams meet at Domain Stadium in an AFL match. After 43 encounters, and some classic matches, the curtain is drawing on what has been the home of the Carlton Draught Derby for more than 20 years.

Why – This game matters
Pride aside, there is plenty at stake in this Sunday’s match. Fremantle did not do retiring legend Matthew Pavlich justice in last weekend’s loss to Sydney, and will want to leave the 350 gamer with fond memories in his 34th and final derby. On the other side of the coin, West Coast are all but guaranteed a finals berth, but have struggled for form in recent weeks, and will want to correct this slide leading into September.
