Top End conditions
Humid and slippery conditions played a part in both teams' ball usage, but Melbourne adapted well and moved the ball to space with great effect. The Demon’s used the handball well as they worked hard to find space, ending the game with 464 disposals to Fremantle’s 329.
The stats that matter - Inside 50s
In the warm, humid conditions, Melbourne entered their attacking 50 on 67 occasions, while Fremantle had 41 inside 50s. Melbourne’s accuracy going into their forward 50 also made a difference, hitting a target on 17 occasions, while Fremantle had seven marks in their attacking 50.
Dees to good for Freo
Pav works hard
Matthew Pavlich worked hard across Fremantle’s forward line and pushed further up the field to provide an exit from defence. The former captain had 13 touches, five marks and kicked three goals.
The Gawn Factor
Max Gawn’s influence can’t be understated, and he had 43 hit-outs, 17 disposals and laid five tackles. Despite having 15 fewer hit-outs, however, Fremantle managed 32 clearances to the Demons 35, indicating they read Gawns’ hit-outs.
Small forwards
Melbourne’s key forwards were always going to be a challenge for Fremantle’s defence, but it was the space created for small forward Dean Kent which stretched Freo’s backline. Kent kicked three goals as well as collecting 15 possessions.
