The Fremantle Dockers are looking to secure their third win in a row this Saturday against Port Adelaide, and senior coach Ross Lyon is looking for continued growth out of Freo players in new roles.
Lyon said he’s been pleased with the contribution of Freo’s players in their new positions, and was looking forward to continuing to experiment in 2016.
“We’ve done it (move players around) and we’re working to continue to improve, and the opportunity to experiment continues for the rest of the season,” Lyon said.
“Michael Walters has played a lot more in the midfield, David Mundy has been at halfback, and Stephen Hill spent three quarters at halfback last week.
“(Hayden) Crozier has gone back and Tommy Sheridan has spent more time on the wing (as well)."
Blooding youth paying dividends for Fremantle
While many players have experienced big changes to their previous roles on game day, Lyon said there are also smaller nuances that have the potential to go unnoticed.
“There are some subtleties that we’re doing,” he said.
“Nick Suban has gone from an inside midfielder to playing an outside running role across forward, halfback and wing.
“Obviously we have a strong understanding of those changes, (but) not all of them were as obvious (as others).”
Learning the priority for Rising Star Weller
Michael Walters has experienced one of the biggest changes this season, as he transitions from his usual forward pocket position into an attacking midfield role.
Walters is averaging a career-high 18.6 disposals a game so far in 2016, and while he also leads Freo with 22 goals in 12 games, Lyon was positive about Walters future in the midfield.
“He’s (Walters) enjoyed it. He went into the midfield last week, had a quick 10 touches and really lit us up,” he said.
“He’s got some bodywork to learn around the stoppages but it’s just a different game (to playing up forward).
He’s a very smart player and understands where he’s falling short and is improving it very quickly.”
