Fremantlefc.com.au examines the favourites for the 2015 Doig Medal.

Aaron Sandilands’ 2015 campaign will go down in the history books.

The 2009 Doig Medallist set a new VFL/AFL record for most hit-outs in a game before breaking it the next round.

He set a record for the most hit-outs in a single game with 69 against Adelaide in round nine before breaking that two weeks later against the Gold Coast with 70.

Big man under the radar

In round 10 against Richmond, the 32-year-old set a VFL/AFL record for the most hit-outs to advantage with 23 after recording a record 69 hit-outs against Adelaide the week before.

He also recorded the second most hit-outs in a single season in history and has the most hit-outs of any player to have played the game.

His ability to give Fremantle’s midfielders first-use of the ball was crucial in the club’s 2015 campaign.

Senior coach Ross Lyon said Sandilands was a consistent performer and leader.

Doig Medal preview: Nat Fyfe

“He’s a really good leader.

“He’s a pleasure to coach.”
