Fremantle general manager player management Brad Lloyd says Freo’s list in years to come will be built around the young and emerging midfield core.
2014 AFLPA MVP Nat Fyfe (23) has had another stellar season so far in 2015 and Lloyd predicts more improvement for the team’s centre line.
“We’ve got Fyfe...Lachie Neale is 21, Stephen Hill is early 20s, so there’s players like that which are really core members of our midfield now that are really in their low 20s and just starting off their careers,” Lloyd told AFL.com.au’s Road to the Draft podcast.
“The midfield is really important to get that going, so we feel we can keep building around that group and they’re only going to get better those guys.”
While Fremantle has six players aged over 30, Lloyd believes the team is in great shape to have sustained success.
Freo unlikely to make play for Carlisle
“There’s areas that need to be addressed, that’s for sure,” he said.
“Looking through over 30s at different clubs, I think Geelong at the start of the year had nine, we’ve got six, Hawthorn have got six, North (Melbourne) six.
“I think in terms of (teams with players aged) 30-plus, six of the top seven of last year’s finalists were in the top group for over 30s.
“You need to be in a mature range to have a shot at it.
“You need to go close enough to the edge to give yourself a chance.”
Lloyd was crucial in Freo’s list overhaul in 2008 and has flagged key position stocks as an area the club will need to invest in during future AFL Drafts.
“With those 37 players coming on the list since ’08, they’re all pretty young but yes there’s areas we need to address, that’s for sure,” he said.
“But I don’t think we’re a hell of a lot different to a number of clubs in that sort of window.”
