Despite Fremantle’s club record 10-1 start to the year, senior coach Ross Lyon says premiers Hawthorn are still the best team in the AFL.
Fremantle head into the bye at the top of the ladder with 10 wins and one loss while Hawthorn are sixth with six wins and four losses.
Lyon said the win-loss record, at this stage of the season, was not necessarily an indicator of the best team.
He said the back-to-back premiers are still the benchmark.

“I firmly believe they’re still proven to be the best team in the competition,” he told Fox Footy.
“Barring a couple of lapses they’d had a few more wins on the board.
“We’re all chasing them until it’s proven otherwise.”
Lyon said Hawthorn were the best offensive and defensive team in recent years.
“We’ve had a good look at them offensively; we’ve tried to model a few things,” he said.
Ladder not indicator of best team
