Fremantle senior coach Ross Lyon knows how tough the AFL competition can be and has spoken about how every team needs to bring its A-game every week.
Lyon alluded to Hawthorn’s shock loss to Essendon in round 2 after the back-to-back premiers dismantled Geelong in round 1 as one lesson in how ruthless the league is.
“The AFL competition has thrown up lots of stories…you’ve got to remain sharp and vigilant,” Lyon said.
“It’s a sharp reminder for all of us how brutal the competition is and how even it is.
“We’re a dog-hungry footy club.
“There’s no silverware in our cupboard…we need to win four points and lots of them to get a decent starting position in the real season.
“That’s the way we’re approaching it.”
Cattery prepares Freo for hostile reception
Fremantle has won its opening two games and Lyon has been pleased the team has had a spread of goal kickers, but he knows the team can’t expect for that to happen again automatically.
“The past is irrelevant,” Lyon said.
“The challenge is to bring it to life again.
“We’re squarely focused on improvement and growth; we think there’s plenty in us.”
Freo takes on West Coast in the Carlton Draught Derby on Sunday 19 April.
