Freo Dockers’ players had a different day compared to their usual schedule on Tuesday afternoon when they conducted the Freo Fundamentals Gala day.
More than 450 pre-primary and year-one students from nine different schools flooded Fremantle Oval for the gala day to learn motor skills, such as throwing and catching a football.
Nuria Yshoroff, a teacher and Auskick ambassador from the Islamic School in Kewdale, said it was a great day for the school to be involved in.
“We’ve got about 65 year-one students down here today,” Nuria said.
“I think today is really important, it’s a great opportunity for my kids.
“Especially coming down from a multicultural school, for the students to get the chance first hand of a up close experience with a Freo player is fantastic.”
“As well as being able to meet the players it’s also vital for the children to develop their physical education skills.
“In particular, the fundamental motor skills which are really important for children in this age group.”
Third-year player Tanner Smith was amongst the players helping conduct the clinic and said it was days like today that inspired him to want to play football.
“I remember when I was younger, these clinics really made me want to keep going with footy,” Smith said.
“I used to love Jonathon Brown, I loved his courage as a player and he was such a strong leader at the club.
“I see a few little talented kids floating around, so hopefully we’ll be seeing them in the future.
“It’s good to give back, and it reminds us how lucky we are to be AFL players.”
