Fremantle defender Cam Sutcliffe believes the team’s tall forward line will pay dividends throughout the season after a promising NAB Challenge opener.

The port side edged out Melbourne by 18 points at Fremantle Oval and Sutcliffe said the new-look attack looked dangerous at times.

“It was good when we penetrated in there (forward line),” he said.

“We obviously had ‘Tabs’ (Matt Taberner), Mick Apeness and ‘Pav’ (Matthew Pavlich) working together and I thought it worked effectively and it will do well for the year.”

Freo go tall in attack

Sutcliffe finished the game with 17 touches after an impressive start, but thought the team did everything asked of them.

“I suppose it’s a good thing (having a good start),” he said.

“I need to learn how to use the footy better, but I guess that will come in more matches.

“It was a pretty good effort by the guys.

“The main focus was effort and playing your role, so I think we did pretty well in that respect.”

Freo now heads to Sydney’s Drummoyne Oval to take on the Swans in their second NAB Challenge match.

Sutcliffe believes the same intensity shown against Melbourne will help get Freo over the line.

“It’s about getting the structures right and putting in effort again,” he said.

“If we bring the same effort that we had today against Sydney, it will be a success.”
