Shortly after he was selected by Fremantle in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft, the club’s first pick Lachlan Weller was asked if he kept up to date with football in Western Australia, given he lives in rugby-mad Queensland.

The 18-year-old went one better – he revealed the he had a poster of Freo superstar Nat Fyfe on his bedroom wall this year.

Weller, who is originally from Tasmania, moved to the Gold Coast three years ago when his older brother Maverick Weller was drafted by the Suns.

He played for NEAFL side Southport and the Queensland State under 18s side this season.

Weller said Fyfe was someone he looked up to in the AFL.

“I just love the way he plays his footy,” he said.

“He’s so hard at it and he’s grown so much as a footballer and made the most of his opportunity.”

Fyfe goes back-to-back

The midfielder will fly to Perth where he will join Fyfe and the rest of the Freo squad for pre-season training.
He said the move West did not bother him.

“I’ve already done a big move from Tasmania to Queensland,” he said.

“I was expecting to move, so it’s fine.

“I can’t wait to get over there. Perth’s a great place.”

Weller will also reunite with Freo players and fellow Tasmanians Brady Grey and Alex Pearce, who were drafted last year.

“I grew up playing with and against Brady in Burnie and also Alex,” he said.
