Anthony Morabito has signed a one-year contract extension with Fremantle.
The talented midfielder, who was out of contract at the end of 2014, will be at the club until at least the end of 2015.
After a career ravaged by a recurring left knee injury, Morabito made his playing return to the AFL in the round 16 match against Melbourne in Darwin.
It came 1394 days after he last played for Fremantle in the 2010 Semi-Final against Geelong at the MCG.
Morabito said the contract extension would give him a great opportunity to continue growing as a footballer.
“It’s a strong environment and a strong club culture and I’m really looking forward to progressing my football with the Fremantle Dockers,” he said.
“I’m was fortunate to get drafted at the same time as a lot of guys, and just seeing how guys like (Nat) Fyfe and (Stephen) Hill have progressed in their short time at the club, it’s just something that I want to be a part of.”
Freo general manager of player management Brad Lloyd said the club was pleased to sign the 22-year-old for another season.
“Anthony has had many hurdles to get over in the past four years, but through strong determination and professionalism he’s returned to competitive football and is playing at a very high level,” he said.
“We’ve been extremely happy with what he’s managed to accomplish this season and we’re very excited to see what he can do in 2015 and beyond.”
Morabito said he would approach a one-year contract the same way he has every season since he first injured his knee in December 2010.
“I’ve got a lot of faith in the support staff that have got me back up and playing a full year now,” he said.
“It’s for me just another progression from this year and trying to get some continuity, which has happened.”
Freo senior coach Ross Lyon recently labelled Morabito’s return to football as “freakish” and said the club was excited to see him continue to grow.
“Four years out of the game, he’s played 14 or 15 games and he’s played senior football,” Lyon said.
“In the near term he’s still available for selection, but we’re excited about 2015 as well.”
Morabito said 2014 had helped him learn a lot about his body.
“It was hard at the start to figure out what you feel like, and I feel like now we’re starting to get a lot of continuity and I’m stringing games together and pulling up a lot better,” he said.
“I’m hopeful for a full summer on the track and ‘away we go’.”
