When Stephen and Brad Hill run out onto the MCG on Saturday, they will become the first brothers in 101 years to play against each other in a VFL/AFL Grand Final.

The last time it happened was in the 1912 VFL Grand Final when Essendon captain Alan Belcher squared off against his brother Vic, who played for South Melbourne.

Stephen’s Fremantle booked its spot with a resounding win over Sydney on Saturday night, while Brad’s Hawthorn overcame its nemesis Geelong in a thriller on Friday night.

The Freo Hill described the club’s win as unbelievable.

“It’s pretty exciting, it doesn’t feel real,” he said.

“The boys played so well. It’s pretty exciting times.”

He said he had watched his younger brother play for the Hawks against Geelong, a game Hawthorn won by five points.

“It was a pretty intense game, Bradley played pretty well,” Stephen said.

The person who faces the biggest dilemma this week is the boys’ mother, Stephanie.

“She’ll be over the moon,” Stephen said.

“I think she’ll be thrilled and looking forward to next week.

“She’ll be going for both of us I think.”

In the Freo rooms following the prelim, Stephanie was thrilled to have both her boys make it to the Grand Final.

“I’m just so excited and proud of them,” she said.

“It’s just a dream come true for them and me and for all our family.

“It’s amazing.”

But Stephanie admitted there might be a few bemused glances come her way in Melbourne on Grand Final day

“I’m going to wear both scarves, Freo and Hawks,” she said.

“I did that at the game they played against each other in Tasmania

“I even had their little baby brother Corey wearing both teams’ colours and people were looking at us very strangely.”

Both Hill’s made their way through the West Perth development pathway in the WAFL.

In a small twist of fate, the Falcons play off against East Perth in the WAFL Grand Final at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.

“It’s great for our old club, hopefully they can get up tomorrow,” Stephen said.
