Alex Silvagni enters this year’s NAB Cup phase knowing a strong performance will be vital if he is to improve on the five appearances he made in the 2012 home and away season.

Freo’s backline was settled last season, with All Australian Luke McPharlin and former St Kilda defender Zac Dawson preferred as the two key backmen.

But Silvagni had a compromised pre-season due to injury in 2012 and never really hit his straps at any point of the year.

This time around he has done everything asked of him and is shaping up far fitter for a tilt at round 1 selection.

The Victorian was very solid in last week’s intra-club hitout, partnering McPharlin against young talls Jack Hannath, Craig Moller and Alex Howson in Dawson’s absence.

Saturday’s round 1 NAB Cup triangular series should give Silvagni the opportunity to test himself and impress the coaches matched up against the quality tall forwards that West Coast and Geelong have in their arsenals.
