Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir has said the Club was honoured to be part of the Indigenous All Stars match after a record crowd turned out at Optus Stadium on Saturday.
A record-breaking 37,865 fans attended Optus Stadium to watch the Indigenous All Stars prevail by 43 points over Fremantle, in the first match the All Stars have played in a decade.
“I think it’s been a really special week, with the build-up and the way the All Stars have got out in the community,” Longmuir said.
“They’ve not just played a game of footy; they’ve spread the word throughout the community. The crowd was a representation of how much effort they’ve put in.
“It’s a credit to them. It’s easy for them to come over and just want to play footy, but they were at functions and school visits.
“Shout out to the AFL as well. They’ve put on a really good show, and we are honoured to be involved in it.”
Longmuir was clear in giving credit to Fremantle veteran and Club legend Michael Walters, who captained the Indigenous All Stars on Saturday, starting in the middle of the ground and kicking a goal before having his minutes managed in the build-up towards Round 1.
“How often (the match should be played)? I’m not sure. This was player-led. I know Sonny (Walters) had a big say in wanting to get one of these games under his belt. It probably fits in Perth every couple of years,” Longmuir said.
Fremantle forward Michael Frederick shared Longmuir’s views.
“He (Walters) was moving alright out there, and it was good to see him get on the scoreboard and enjoy it with a lot of his good mates who he’s played footy with before,” Frederick said.
“I’m sure a lot of the guys in the All Stars team would have idolised him (Walters) as kids, and for them to run out with Sonny would have been unreal.”
Fremantle will now play an intraclub game on Sunday 23 February, before travelling to Mandurah to play Melbourne in the Club’s one and only AAMI Community Series game.
