Fremantle captain Alex Pearce has signed a two-year contact extension to remain at the Club until at least the end of 2027.

The new deal will take the 29-year-old to 14 seasons in purple and Pearce says he hopes to achieve ‘something special’ with his teammates.

“I’m very excited. This is the place I want to be,” said Pearce.

“To be able to extend for a couple of years, I think really helps me focus in on what these next three years can look like. I think we can achieve a lot.”

Head of Player Personnel David Walls says Pearce’s contract extension is thoroughly deserved and paid tribute to his form and leadership.

“Alex was on track for All Australian selection before he was injured last season and we played our best footy when he was leading from defence,” said Walls.

“He really steadies the ship down back and everyone walks taller with him out there.

“He is a tremendous leader of our football club on and off field and you can’t underestimate the role he plays with our young defenders.

“Josh Draper, Ollie Murphy and Hugh Davies all look up to him.

“He’s playing a massive role in their development – not to mention how valuable it is having him manning up on Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss at training each week.”

After two seasons as captain, Pearce believes he’s adjusted to being his natural self with connections never better on and off-field.

“I think I’m probably enjoying my footy as much as I ever have,” said Pearce.

“As you get older your role changes and you mature as a person. Your relationship with the footy club and the support changes.

“At the moment – with my role and with the people we have got around the footy club and our playing group – it’s a really good group of guys that I love coming to work with and connect really well with.

“The staff we have – our coaches, football staff and the wider group that makes up this footy club – are a bunch of people that I love spending time with and really love working towards achieving something really special with.

“There’s an element of focusing on myself and being the best player I can be because that will inevitably make us a better team.”

Selected from Ulverstone in Tasmania with pick 37 in the 2013 National Draft, the 201cm key defender has played 122 games since his debut in round 6, 2015.

He believes squad depth can help drive the team after a tenth placed finish in 2024.

“Matty Johnson and Neil Erasmus are guys who are really hungry and at the moment we have a list where there is not just 22 or 26 players fighting for a spot,” said Pearce.

“We have 30 - pushing on 40 players - that are really hungry and desperate to play.

“That makes an environment where everyone is trying to get the very most out of themselves and it’s elevating the level that we are competing at.”

Pearce was in hot form last season until breaking his left forearm twice and being forced to the sidelines.

Now in full training, he’s been selected to honour his Palawa heritage and represent the Indigenous All Stars against Fremantle at Optus Stadium on 15 February.
