Former top AFL recruiter Matt Rendell has lauded Fremantle’s 2020 draft haul as one of the best in the competition after picking up four WA players in the NAB AFL National Draft on Wednesday.
Freo rounded out the draft period with the selection of promising key forward Josh Treacy from country Victoria in the rookie draft.
Rendell praised the way Freo selected top end talent with their first two picks and was surprised Fremantle were able to add NGA products Brandon Walker and Joel Western so late in the draft.
“The four clubs that I thought did best were Essendon, Collingwood, GWS and Freo,” Rendell said on SEN.
“Freo had two NGAs (academy draft picks) and Collingwood had one.
“I like the way Freo went with their NGAs. They took them at the back end. No one bid on them.
“I had Brandon Walker really high, I liked him and Western and they took two locals in O’Driscoll and Chapman.”
Fellow footy commentator Kane Cornes had a similar sentiment to Rendell on Freo’s future.
“If I was on the stock market and buying shares in a club, I’d buy shares in Fremantle,” Cornes said on SEN.
“I love the list that they’re building.
“It’s not going to be next year, but in the next couple of years.”
