The man teammates call ‘Barra’ had 26 disposals and nine tackles in Freo’s record-breaking win over Brisbane at Patersons Stadium.
Mundy had 14 contested disposals and stood out with precise ball-use that defied the wetconditions.
He said after the game that he enjoyed playing in the rain.
“I certainly do, I’m from Victoria,” he said.
“It really strips football back to the real basics. You’ve just got to put your head over the footy and it becomes a territory war… you’ve just got to get the football forward.”
Get the football forward is what Fremantle did, particularly in a stunning first half display that saw Brisbane score just one behind (rushed) and have only three entries inside 50.
At game’s end, the Lions final score of 22 points was the lowest Freo had ever conceded. The club also allowed just 17 inside 50 entries, breaking its own AFL record of 20 which it set against Brisbane in 2012.
Mundy was very pleased with the team effort to achieve the records, and he said it started in the midfield.
“It obviously makes it a lot easier for our forwards and our backs,” Mundy said.
“We were really quite dominant early and giving our forwards the best option and opportunity.”
Records aside, Mundy said most satisfying was the uncompromising nature of Freo’s performance.??“It was obviously challenging conditions and we got off to a good start and got a fairly healthy lead,” he said.
“I think the strength of the group in this particular game was that we were able to continue it on for the four quarters.”
Freo’s win, coupled with Geelong’s loss to Gold Coast on Saturday, sent Ross Lyon’s men into the top four, but Mundy said the club wasn’t concerned with ladder positions at this stage of the season.
“By the end of the year it will become a bit more important but we’ve got a lot to improve on still from tonight,” he said.
“We’re just trying to improve and become the best team that we can be.”
And as for his 200th in next Saturday’s Carlton Draught Derby at Patersons Stadium, Mundy was already mindful of what it will mean to him.
“It means I have to get a lot of tickets and my spare room is going to be full with my family coming over,” he said.
“Derbies are obviously big weeks and big games.
“Aaron (Sandilands) played his 200th earlier in the year in a Derby and we managed to get up, so hopefully the boys just bring good effort and we have a good day.”
